I recently had a Book Group discussion at Yogaworks on the topic of Breastfeeding.
All the expectant mothers there needed no encouragement to breastfeed, but were understandably worried about how to actually put this information into practice. We watched a video called the “Real Deal on Breastfeeding”, which showed a little one feeding to give the mothers a visual. We also talked about some really common questions like, “Can I eat sushi ever again?”, or “Should I avoid certain foods?”. We dispelled some myths and made others sad…sorry Sara, a little longer to wait for your favorite sashimi.
Though my students that day needed almost no convincing of the benefits of breastfeeding, I often find some women that do.
Here are some of my favorite reasons to support breastfeeding.
~Breastfeeding is very GREEN. Mothers milk requires no packaging, requires no energy to heat, or ship, and creates no waste. Formula is made from soybeans, or cows milk. Grazing cattle contribute to deforestation, resulting in land depletion and soil erosion. Growing soy requires fertilization and irrigation.
~Breastfed babies are healthier. They are less likely to have ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, wheezing, and bacterial and viral illnesses, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
~Breastfeeding is healthier for Mom. Women who breastfeed have reduced rates of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. It also saves time for busy Moms who don’t want to spend hours preparing bottles and formula.
~Moms who breastfeed get skinny. Production of milk is an active metabolic process, requiring the use of 200 to 500 calories per day, on average. This is like swimming at least 30 laps in a pool or bicycling uphill for an hour daily. Studies have confirmed that non-breastfeeding mothers lose less weight and don’t keep it off as well as breastfeeding mothers (Brewer 1989)
I am a breastfeeding mother of two girls. I have enjoyed each moment that I have been able to slow down and feed my child(ren). I hope you will too.
